What Are Fair Trade Coffees: A Beginner's E-Book And Some Details
Those who love fine coffee have numerous decisions to make. There're a large number of various types of coffee being sold and the options include selecting green or roasted beans to start with and whether to have roasted beans ground or to do it at home. There is also the matter of how dark a roast is desired and what type of grind is greatest for the coffee brewing process being used. But what does it mean when a selection is known as one of the fair trade coffees?
Aside from Kona coffee which is grown domestically in Hawaii, all coffee in America is imported. Different international groups have in the past tried to control the wholesale and to some degree the retail price of coffee. This benefited big growers and coffee brokers but did very little for smaller coffee growers. Fair trade coffees on the other hand are priced and sold to offer a better return to the smallest of operations and strive to improve working and living conditions in addition to benefiting the regional community around coffee farms.
To be called fair trade coffees, they have to be sold by farmers who belong to a coop and meet certain other criteria. For example, they're forbidden to use child labor and certain regulations are in place to maintain safety at work. The operations of the coop are needed to be democratic and clear and there is a policy of contributing to the community in addition to receiving individual profit. Coffees which have been produced according to the requirements receive fair trade certification from the Fair Trade Labeling Organization.
Fair trade coffees are bought from the coops at a price that's about the normal for wholesale coffee at this level. Growers in a coop are guaranteed a minimum price, but if the real price is higher, they receive the actual price. Not all of the profit goes straight to the grower as the coop retains some of it for operating expenses but particularly for community betterment. Fair trade coffees have offered academic scholarships to kids and young adults who would otherwise never had this type of chance. Other benefits have included cancer screening programs and ecological improvement.
While fair trade coffees now constitute a small percentage of the total worldwide coffee market, that figure is increasing each year. Religious and other non profit groups encourage their members to buy fair trade coffees as a way to help enhance the quality of life for others while obtaining a high quality product. A decent percentage of fair trade coffees are being grown organically which also adds to their appeal among customers who prefer more organic foods and drinks.
